3 Padel Tactics to Dominate Your Game

Once you know the rules, winning at padel is all about smart play. These three padel tactics separate beginners from intermediate players faster than any single shot or expensive racket. The best part: you do not need elite power or fitness to use them โ€” just better decisions. In this guide we break down the three padel tactics that win the most points: intelligent positioning, the match-changing lob, and controlling the net. Drill these on the indoor courts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi and you will climb the rankings of your social group quickly.

Why Tactics Beat Power in Padel

Padel is a game of patience and positioning, not brute force. Because the walls keep the ball in play, smashing as hard as you can often just hands your opponents an easy rebound. The players who win consistently are the ones who construct points, force errors and take control of the net. Master these padel tactics and you will out-think opponents who out-hit you.

Tactic 1: Positioning โ€” Move as a Wall of Two

The single biggest mistake new players make is treating padel like singles. It is a doubles game, and your positioning relative to your partner decides most points.

Move Together, Always

Think of you and your partner as connected by an invisible rope about four metres long. When one of you moves left, the other shifts left. When one moves forward, the other follows.

  • Never leave a gap down the middle โ€” it is the most common place to get beaten.
  • Mirror your partner’s depth. If they are pushed back to defend, you drop back too; if they advance, you advance.
  • Cover the middle. Most winning shots in padel go through the centre, so the player on the forehand side usually takes the middle ball โ€” agree this with your partner before the match.

The Two Zones

There are only two good places to be in padel: both players up at the net, or both players back at the baseline. The worst position is “no man’s land” โ€” one player up and one back, or both stranded in the middle of the court. Decide as a team and move as a team.

Tactic 2: The Lob โ€” Padel’s Most Underrated Weapon

If you learn one new shot to win more matches, make it the lob (the “globo”). At intermediate level, a well-placed lob is more valuable than any smash.

Why the Lob Wins Points

When your opponents are dominating the net, you cannot beat them with low, hard shots โ€” they will volley those for winners. Instead, you lift the ball high over their heads and deep into the back of the court. A good lob does three things at once:

  1. Pushes them off the net, forcing them back into defensive positions.
  2. Lets you and your partner advance to take the net yourselves.
  3. Buys time when you are under pressure, resetting the rally on your terms.

How to Lob Well

  • Aim deep: target the last two metres of the court so the ball drops near the back glass and is hard to attack.
  • Go high enough: the ball must clear an outstretched racket โ€” too low and it gets smashed back at your feet.
  • Lob over the backhand: most players are weaker overhead on their backhand side, so target that shoulder.
  • Disguise it: prepare as if for a normal drive, then open the racket face at the last moment.

On the UAE’s indoor courts the bounce is consistent and predictable, which makes the deep lob especially reliable to practise and trust.

Tactic 3: Control the Net โ€” But Earn It

In padel, the team at the net controls the point. From the net you can volley downwards, hit smashes and dictate where the ball goes. But there is a catch: you have to get there intelligently.

How to Take the Net

  • Use the lob (see above) to push opponents back, then move forward together.
  • Follow your serve in carefully โ€” but only advance when your shot is good enough that you will not get passed at your feet.
  • Hit and move: after a deep shot that pins your opponents back, take two or three steps toward the net.

How to Hold the Net

  • Volley deep and low to keep opponents pinned at the back.
  • Be patient with the smash: against the back glass, a controlled, well-placed smash (or a “vรญbora”) beats a wild, full-power swing that comes back off the wall.
  • Stay compact: protect the middle and let the rebounding walls do some of your defending for you.

Putting the Three Padel Tactics Together

The winning pattern combines all three:

  1. Position as a tight pair so there are no gaps to exploit.
  2. Lob to dislodge opponents from the net when they are on top.
  3. Advance and control the net yourselves, then close out the point.

None of this requires huge power โ€” just smart, repeatable decisions. Practise these padel tactics for a few sessions and you will notice you are winning points you used to lose.

Gear That Helps You Execute

Tactics come first, but the right equipment makes them easier to pull off. A control-oriented racket gives you the precision to place lobs and volleys exactly where you want them, and a fresh grip keeps your hand steady through long rallies.
